Adventure Plot:
Many years ago, two renown adventurers, Rogahn the Fearless and Zelligar
the Unknown pooled their resources together and built a stronghold high up on
a craggy hill, away from civilized lands. They carved their home right ouf of
the rocks on a heavily forested hill and called it the Caverns of Quasqueton.
Rogahn and Zelligar lived secluded for many years, conducting their affairs
from within Quasqueton, not disturbing the settlements in the valley. Tales of
their adventures rumored about, but no one was sure of their past. Some say
evil arts were performed deep within Quasqueton.
But what is known about them that is true was when a horde of barbarians
invaded the valley below. Rogahn and Zelligar combined their powers and forces
and erradicated the barbarian forces. To the much appreciations of the
populace in the valley, the people rewarded Rogahn and Zelligar with
considerable treasure and they returned to their reclusive living.
Many years has passed and no one has seen either. Tales of their journey
to the barbarian land to destroy the invaders have circulated around the
valley. As well as tales of their demise in the barbarian land. No one knows
for sure if they are still alive, but the two has not been seen for a very long
time. What riches and dark secrets hides in the Caverns of Quasqueton, and who
dares to go and find out?
Review:
(1st Printing)
In Search of the Unknown was written as an introduction module for
new players and dungeon masters. It has a section on teaching the points of
what makes a good Dungeon Master. The back of the module has a section on
henchmen, hirelings and NPCs that the players can interact with.
The module itself is a typical Basic-level module, "dungeon crawling".
There are 56 rooms in the Caverns of Quasqueton. Each room in the module has
a blank section for the DM to fill-in the monsters and treasures that might be
in the room. A list of monsters and treasures are included in the back.
Although the module is part of the Dungeons & Dragons product line,
there were many Advanced Dungeons & Dragons flavors peppered in, including
spells (Magic Mouth, Audible Glamer), class titles and even references
of where the Caverns should be located in Greyhawk. This is understandable
since Mystara was probably not as fully developed as Greyhawk at the time.
Another interesting quirk about this module is that the rooms are numbered by
roman numerals instead of numbers.
